YOU vs SUMMER

 

 

Summertime is in full swing! We just wrapped up the 4th of July activities from cookouts to ice cold beer and we’re now entering the heart of summer! A lot of us are now counting down the days till we leave for vacation and in between counting down the days till vacation we are enjoying some ice cream here and there and maybe a cold beer while we grill out. Summer time is awesome, but let’s face it, it can be challenging to keep focus of our goals with all the outside distractions that summertime can bring.  With that being said I have a list of TIPS that I use to keep myself focused on my greater goals!

 

-Train EVERYDAY! Even if it is just 100 push ups and 100 sit ups. SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING!

 

-Don’t get discouraged. There are so many factors that could discourage you. Note that not everyday is going to be your best day. Sometimes it might be the heat, other times it might be that 6 pack of Bud Light you drank on the 4th of July that made your 5th of July workout suck ass. It happens. Show up anyway, give your best, punch the card and move on!

 

-Give yourself some slack. Don’t be so hard on yourself, you can’t expect to PR every single day. Take the bad days on the chin and go back and get it again tomorrow!

 

-Enjoy your vacation and Holiday times. Forget about the gym, ENJOY!

YES, I said it! Enjoy yourself, eat the chips and load up the burgers! One bad meal wont make you fat just like 1 salad wont make you skinny.  Now this doesn’t mean to NOT go to the gym, or to NOT train that day. YOU STILL SHOULD TRAIN- TO KEEP THE EDGE! After you train, then enjoy yourself.

 

I have personally trained 7 days a week for years. This doesn’t mean that I am in the gym 7 days a week. There is usually 1 day a week where I will stay home focus on active recovery, stretch and maybe do some light body weight exercises.

I understand my body and my mind. I know that during the summer I like to enjoy the outdoors, food, vacations and events more compared to the winter time. I remember constantly getting down on myself if I didn’t get the PR session everyday like I wanted to. Knowing that if I wouldn’t have stayed up late the night before or if I would have subbed in some chicken and rice instead of the oreos that my training would have gone better. So there I was, like a robot not enjoying the JOYS that summer and life was giving me. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I NEEDED BALANCE! Balance, how much “fun” can I have while still being able to accomplish my goals in the gym. That is what I had to find and I was the only one who would be able to find it for me. I found it and now I understand how to balance my life with the gym. You will have to learn and understand yourself and the balance you will have to make to be able to get the MOST out of both.

 

I wrote this article to let those reading know that we are all human. We all want to enjoy life and want the most out of everything we are doing. You can accomplish BOTH, because you will never be able to accomplish just 1. You must fill your glass to have the ability to empty your glass. Keep you glass full with the happiness life brings, enjoy yourself in those moments. When the moment is over start watering your goals with the balance you created.
